Fundus autofluorescence is a study used to visualize and document the health of the vessels and tissue of the retina. Like fluorescein angiography, filters are used to detect light of a certain wave-length. However, by using the naturally occurring fluorescence (glow) of the retina, no injection of dye is needed. The physician can discover or confirm problems of the retina, including diseased retinal pigment epithelium (the thin tissue just behind the retina) from age-related macular degeneration and other diseases, abnormal blood vessels, inflammatory conditions, blockage of blood flow, and more.
