What is an intraocular infection?

An intraocular infection, also called endophthalmitis, is an infection that develops inside the eye, causing severe inflammation.

An intraocular infection usually comes from an outside source of bacteria that gets inside the eye during surgery, from an injection to the eyeball, or from an eye injury. It’s also possible that an intraocular infection develops from somewhere inside your body.

What are the symptoms of an intraocular infection?

An intraocular infection causes the whites of your eyes to become inflamed. You could also see a yellow discharge inside the eyelid or on the eye. The transparent front part of the eye that covers your pupil, called the cornea, could also appear cloudy.

Other symptoms include:

• Redness in the eye
• Pain in the eye
• Decreased vision
• Difficulty looking at bright light

Symptoms typically come on quickly once the infection sets in and can appear 1-6 days after an injury to the eye or eye surgery.

How is an intraocular infection treated?

Before treatment begins, your ophthalmologist consults with you about recent procedures, surgeries, or injuries you’ve experienced.

Next, your eye exam begins. Through a series of tests and looking into your eyes, your symptoms are detected and a diagnosis is made.

Typical treatments include:

• Antibiotic injection
• Antifungal injection

• Vitrectomy surgery
